National President John Hegarty and other members of the National Executive Board recently attended the AFL-CIO Convention, where delegates from all unions affiliated with the federation tackled important issues facing the labor movement. As reported in the media, major efforts focused on changing the labor movement to speak for working people now and in the future through growth, innovation and political action; creating a voice and prosperity for all in the global economy; and building genuine, durable community partnerships and effective grassroots power.
President Hegarty had the opportunity to address the delegates in support of Resolution 40 and sensible postal reform. The NPMHU, with support from other postal union affiliates of the AFL-CIO, is working to build broad public coalitions to resist more damaging austerity in the Postal Service and to build support for sensible reform. “This is a jobs issue,” said President Hegarty. “Postal employment means good, middle class jobs that traditionally provide opportunities for our returning veterans. Cutting service and cutting jobs is the wrong approach. We need to grow the business, and to keep service standards in place.” Resolution 40 was unanimously adopted by the delegates to the Convention.
