Through the hard work of our Union, we were able to keep out harmful provisions within the reconciliation package, H.R. 1 - the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
Early versions of the bill used Mail Handlers and other postal and federal employees' retirement benefits as a means to reduce the deficit. These proposals would have reduced the take-home pay of Mail Handlers, change how Mail Handler's annuity is calculated, as a well as made it harder to afford retirement. But through our lobbying and grassroots actions, we were able to have this language removed from the House and Senate versions before final passage of H.R. 1 on July 3.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time - and it won't be the last - that members of Congress have used the earned benefits of hard working men and women to cut federal spending. Mail Handlers are not the source of the problem, and we should not be the solution. We were successful this time to ensure the Union was not harmed by this bill, and we will continue to be vigilant against any attacks against our livelihoods in the future.
